"Scripture Prophecies of the Old Testament"
SS Prophecies of OT
Scripture Prophecies of the Old Testament As Edwards himself notes at the outset of the entries collected here, this is "besides," or supplemental to, "Prophecies of the Messiah," located in "Miscellanies," nos. 891, 922, and 1067. Where the "Miscellanies" entries date from the 1740s, Edwards began this series no earlier than 1754 and possibly as late as 1756. Most of the entries are struck through with "use lines," but where Edwards used them is not known, since these materials were not apparently added to "Prophecies of the Messiah." Only a few entries on p. 7, and all the entries on p. 8, do not have a vertical line drawn through them. * This notebook (BRBL, f. 1248) is seven leaves, some of which are constructed from a cut-up commencement broadside from the College of New Jersey for 1754. That the people should be exterminated by little and little, Deut. 7:22, Ex. 23:29-30. That way should be made for their possessing of the land by the destruction of the former inhabitants, Ex. 15:16. These, besides the prophecies of the Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah, which are considered elsewhere.I.e. "Miscellanies," nos. 891, 922, and 1067, "Prophecies of the Messiah." The prophecies of Noah concerning the posterity of his three sons. Gen. 9:24, &c. Promises of the land of Canaan, so many so interspersed everywhere, with the rest of the Pentateuch; that if the Pentateuch or Law itself was written before they became possessed of Canaan, we must suppose these promises were written before. Gen. 12:1-7. These promises are connected with the whole history of Abraham's coming into that land, with its circumstances, and the kindred left behind. Gen. 11:27 to the end; Gen. 12:1-7 to the end; the whole 24th chapter; Gen 28:2, with the whole story in that chapter; Gen. 29:5, 10-15, with the whole story in that and the following chapters of Jacob's sojourning in Padan-aram. Gen. 13:14 to the end. See the circumstances of the promise, their preceeding bondage in Egypt, the time of their deliverance, and the bounds of the land not fulfilled till David's time Gen. 15:18 to the end. Concerning the BOUNDS of the land not only agreeing to what was fulfilled in Joshua's time, but also some part not till David's time, see Gen. 15:18 to the end; Ex. 23:31; Deut. 1:7-8 and 11, 24; Josh. 1:4. That the people should not extend their possessions to those large borders at first, Deut. 12:20, ch. 19:8-9. These promises in the beginning were so connected with all the history of Moses's call, and his bringing the people out of Egypt, that the whole history is built on the promises and can't be separated. They were plainly written together, and indeed, the whole of all their march from thence through the whole is as it were a comment on these promises strictly connected. See Ex. 15:14-17; ch. 16:23, 27 to the end; Ex. 32:13, and 33:1-3, 12-17, and 34:10-16; the whole 13th and 14th chapters of Numbers; ch. 20:5, 12, 24, and 23:24, and 24:8, and 27:12-13; Num. 22:9. 11, 16 to the end, and 33:50 to the end; the whole of the 34th and 35th and 36th chapters; Deut 1:6- 8, 19 to the end; Deut. 2:29, and 3:18 to the end, and 4:1, 5, 14, 21-22, 26, 37-38, 40; Deut. 5:16, 31, 33, and 6:1, 3, 10-11, 18-19, 23; Deut. 7:1-5, 16 to the end, and 8:1, 7 to the end, and 9:1-6, 27-28; Deut. 10:11, and 11:8-17, 21, 23-25, 29-31; ch. 12, throughout, and 13:12-16, and 14:21 to the end, and 15:4 and throughout, and 16:2, 6, 9-11, 13-18, and 17:2, 8, 14, and 18:1-9, 14 and 19:1-14, and 20:15-18, and 21:18, and 23:20, and 24:19 to the end, and 25:19, and 26:1-15, and 27:1-14, and 28:1 to the end, and 29:22, and 30:1-10, 18, 20, and 31:1-8, 10-13, 20-21, 23, and 32:13-14, 47 to the end, and 33:13-16, 28 and 34:1-3. And so are the laws of Moses, and promises and threatenings, Ex. 12:25, 48, and 13:5, 11. So the Ten Commandments. Ex. 20:12; Ex. 23:10-11, 16-18; ch. 16:23, 24:2; Ex. 34:10-16 and vv. 23-24; Lev. 14:34-35, etc.; ch. 18:3, 27-28; Lev. 19:9-10, 23-25, 33-34; ch. 20:23-24; ch. 23:10-11, etc., vv. 22, 39; Lev. 24:22; ch. 25:2-34, and v. 39 to the end; Lev. 26:1, 4- 6, 20, 22, 31-34, 43, and 27:14-25, 30; Num. 9:14, and 10:9, and 15:2, 18, 21, and 18:13, 20 to the end. Those predictions and promises are so connected and interwoven with the whole history, and the lands in general, that not only is there an express respect to innumerable places, but in other parts there is visible respect to this promise and expectation; an evident regard to it runs through the whole, so that all together may be looked upon as a complicated, variegated prediction of this event. The KINGS should be of Abraham's posterity, Gen. 17:6, not fulfilled till Samuel's time. See also v. 16, ch. 35:11, Gen. 49:10, Num. 24:7, 17-19, Deut. 17:15. A prediction of the place where the TEMPLE was to be built, implied, Gen. 22:2, 14. Prophecy that Jacob should overcome the posterity of Esau, Gen. 25:22-23, and 27, 29 and 37:40. That Esau should break his brother's yoke off from his neck, Gen. 27. 40. That the people in future generations should be prone to idolatry, Deut. 31:16, 27-29 and 32:15-18. Prophecies concerning Ishmael, [Gen.]Corner of page broken off. 16:9-12. Jacobs Blessing of the Tribes Gen. 49. The manner of their conquering and taking possession of the land remarkably fulfilled, though it was several ages fulfilling, Ex. 23:27-33. That they should eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, when distressed and besieged by their enemies, Lev. 26:29-30, etc., Deut. 28:53-57; fulfilled, II Kgs. 6:28, etc., Lam. 2:20 and 4:10. That God would thus destroy 'em by a nation which neither they nor their fathers had known, Deut. 28:36, a nation from the end of the earth whose name they could not understand, Deut. 28:49. That their cities should be destroyed and laid waste, and the whole land, Lev. 26:31- 33, Deut 32:20, etc. That their destruction should be especially for idolatry, Deut. 31:16-17 and 32:15-26. That in the land of their captivity they should serve other gods, fulfilled in the obstinacy and impenitance of those carried into Chaldea; as appears by Ezekiel, ch. 2, and other parts, especially those that went into Egypt, Jer. 44:25-26. There is all reason to think that great part of 'em worshipped Nebuchadnezzar's golden image; see Ezek. 14: 3- 7 and ch. 20:30- 32, 39. This was fulfilled in the Jews' following false messiahs after their captivity and dispersion by the Romans. Of the idolatry of those that were left in the land, see Ezek. 33:25, etc. That the temple should be destroyed, Lev. 26:31. That the greater partI.e. the greater part of the Hebrew people. should be destroyed, Deut. 4:26, Deut. 28:62 and 32:26. Find no ease or rest among the nations, Deut. 28:65-6[6]. That after they were dispersed, God would draw out a sword after them, Lev. 26:3. Compare Ezek. 5:7, 12, and 24:23 and 15:7. In part fulfilled, Jer. 44:7, 11-14, 27, 29-30. Fulfilled in the sword that pursued the Jews after their captivity by the Romans, "Miscellanies," no. 972."Miscellanies," no. 972; see WJE 20:264. That the land should lie desolate till their land had enjoyed her sabbaths, Lev. 26:34-35, 43. That those that should be left in the land should be afraid, and Remarkeably fulfilled in Jer. 41:17-18, and 42:10-16 and 43:2-7. They shall fall when none pursueth. "And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth, Lev. 26:36-37 Fulfilled in Jer. 41:2, 7, 10, 12, 15. They should be brought into Egypt again, Deut. 28:68. That they should perish among the heathen, and the land of their enemies should eat them up, and that they that are left of 'em should pine away in their iniquity in their enemies' land, remarkably fulfilled as to the Ten Tribes and on the Jews after the destruction by Titus. That yet on their repentance they should be restored again to their own land, Deut. 30:1-10 and 32:36, 43. That their restoration to their own land should be on the destruction of the nation that destroyed them, Deut. 32:36-43. That they should be rejected from being God's people, and another people that had been heathen should be called in their room, Deut. 32:21. That their destruction should be attended with a great variety and multitude of unspeakable and unparalleled calamities, and testimonies of God's wrath"the sword without" and terrible destruction within [Deut. 32:25]--and particular That God would raise 'em up a prophet, Deut. 18:15, etc. Afterwards, God would destroy their destroyers with great manifestations of his power and mercy to his people, Deut. 32:35-42. That in the end of all, gentiles and Jews should together be the people of God, [Deut. 32:]43. That their king should be higher than Agag. Num. 24:7. That a star rising out of Jacob should smite the four corners of Moab, Num. 24:17, and conquer Edom, v. 18. That Amalek should be utterly destroyed, Ex. 17:14 and Num. 24:20. The conquests of the Assyrians, Num. 24:22. The great and extensive conquests of the Macedonians and Romans over all the eastern parts of the world, Num. 24:24, and the dreadful destruction they should make, particularly of the Hebrews, fulfilled in Antiochus and Titus and those that destroyed the Jews afterwards.
