'Tis from the exceeding imperfect notions that we have of the nature or essence of God, and because we can't think of it but we must think of it far otherwise than it is, that arises the difficulty in our mind of conceiving of God's existing without a cause. 'Tis repugnant to the nature of our souls, and what our faculties utterly refuse to admit, that anything that is capable of being one part of a proper disjunction should exist and be as it is, rather than not exist or exist otherwise without causes. Our notions we have of the divine nature are so imperfect that our imperfect idea admits of a disjunction, for whatsoever is not absolutely perfect doth so. [In] everything that is imperfect there is dependence, or contingent existence implied in the nature of it, or we can conceive of its being a part of a disjunction. Now when conversion is spoken of under the appellation of repentance, the exercise of mind about the term from which or about sin, is especially respected; as Acts 26:19–20 , "Whereupon, O King Agrippa, I showed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should REPENT and TURN TO GOD . 670. Though perseverance is acknowledged by Calvinian divines to be necessary to salvation, yet it seems to me that the manner in which it is necessary has not been sufficiently set forth. 'Tis owned to be necessary as a sine qua non ; and also is expressed by that, that though it is not that by which we first come to have a title to eternal life, yet it is necessary in order to the actual possession of it, as the way to it; that it is impossible that we should come to it without perseverance, as 'tis impossible for a man to go to a city or town without traveling throughout the road that leads to it. But we are really saved by perseverance, so that salvation has a dependence on perseverance, as that which influences in the affair, so as to render it congruous that we should be saved. That there is NO GOOD WORK BEFORE CONVERSION , and actual union with Christ, is manifest from that, Romans 7:4 , "Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married unto another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God." Hence we may argue that there is no lawful child brought forth before that marriage. It was wisely determined of God that the effect of the fall should be seen in a very conspicuous and visible and universal manner, both with respect to temporal and spiritual death, before Christ came into the world to work out redemption: with respect to spiritual death, in the apostasy of the world to visible wickedness, casting off the true God and worshipping of idols, and into that gross heathenism wherein the things that appertain to spiritual death, such as man's ignorance and blindness, unreasonableness, and brutality, and slavery to the devil, etc., are remarkably conspicuous; and with respect to temporal death, in the destruction of the universal deluge, wherein the effect of the fall, in the temporal destruction of the fallen world, as the fruit of sin, and as inflicted by God's wrath was most remarkably conspicuous, much more than in the death of mankind, as it happens in the ordinary course of nature. The hand of God and his wrath were more visible in it; and the awfulness of the tendency of the fall with respect to temporal destruction was much more manifest many ways. Though all men are subject to death as it comes in the ordinary course of nature, yet the world of mankind is not so properly destroyed by death in this way; though all men die one after another, yet the world of mankind yet lives. Men do, as it were, live in their families; and death in this way, though it be universal, yet is so gradual that it is not set before us in one view, as the destruction of the world of mankind, but little is seen at a time: death not gaining the conquest, and triumphing in universal awful devastation, as in the other case, but the world still rejoices in life; and natural generation, as it were, maintaining its ground against death, yea, gaining ground of it by giving more life than death takes away, and so gradually increasing the number of living men on earth. And especially before the flood was it thus, when men's lives were so long and mankind increased and multiplied so fast. God was pleased by the flood to give one example of the mischief of the fall, the ill effects of sin in the ruin that it has exposed all mankind to, by the temporal destruction of the world at once; and a very remarkable image of their awful eternal destruction, before he accomplished the salvation of the world by Christ, and in a sense before the work of redemption of the world by Christ was begun, as it was begun after the flood in the CALLING OF ABRAHAM . 815. The world is vastly more extensively peopled now than it was before Christ. Then, very great part, and perhaps the greater part, of the inhabitants of the world were within the limits of the Roman Empire, or on its borders; but now what is confined within those limits is but a little part of the world. And 'tis very probable that the devil, who had for so many ages reigned as god of this world, and had miserably enslaved the nations of it, did after Christ's ascension, when he saw how wonderfully the gospel prevailed, lead away many people into the more remote corners of the earth. And this may account for the people of the northern cold regions of the earth where the climate seems to be almost intolerable, which perhaps can scarcely be accounted for otherwise. And particularly 'tis probable that it is hence that AMERICA 816. The following reasons seem to render it probable that FEW ARE CONVERTED IN INFANCY . 817. DEGREES OF GLORY 818.
