  • Directions to Jonathan Edwards sites

The directions below are intended to provide a self-guided tour to sites relating to Jonathan Edwards and his family.

From the Jonathan Edwards Center, 409 Prospect St., New Haven, CT 06511:

1. Birthplace/Cemetery/Church/Seminary (South Windsor)

North on I-91, go through Hartford
Take I-291 East, get off at Rt. 5 exit, turn left onto Rt. 5.
Go left at first light (Chapel Rd. towards Connecticut River), go right on (Old) Main St.

-First see Timothy Edwards church on left;


 

-Then birthplace on right (sign out front);


-Then cemetery (look for graves of Timothy and Esther Edwards, and daughters Jerusha and Lucy)

-Finally, East Windsor Seminary (President’s house on right, dormitory on left).

 

2. Enfield (the site of preaching of Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God)

Continue north on Old Main St. till it ends; turn left onto Rt. 5 (north); this takes you right to the middle of Enfield

-Stone with Sinners plaque is on left a little before the First Congregational Church, which is on right (this church is a later structure

than the one Edwards preached in)

 

 

3. Longmeadow

Continue north on Rt. 5

  • Longmeadow Commons has numerous historical houses around it;
  • On right, near north end of Commons, is Longmeadow Congregational Church (pastored by JE’s cousin, Stephen Williams)


4. Northampton

Keep going north on Rt. 5, get on I-91 North, to ex. 18, turn left onto Rt. 10; take Rt. 10 into the center of N’ton, turn left on Main St.

  • Church (brownstone) is on the right (see plaque on front steps commemorating 1737 structure);

        -Historic Northampton is east on Main St.: go under train trestle, on left (includes exhibits on Northampton's settlement and

          development, and several historic houses);

        -Bridge St. cemetery: go further east on Main St., cemetery is on left (go around back to find open gate). From back entrance, the

        graves of David Brainerd and Jerusha Edwards are to the right and towards the front, just behind the older section of cemetery with

        “table” graves on a small rise (including those of Stoddards)

5. Stockbridge

Get on Mass Turnpike West; take Rt. 102 exit (Pleasant St.), go west to Stockbridge.

        -Stockbridge Library is on the left (has some JE memorabilia);

        -Go down street a little ways, JE home site on right, marked by small marble fountain;

 

         -At corner, on right, is Mission House (home of Rev. John and Abigail Sargeant, open to public);

 

        -Old church and cemetery are above the town; ask for directions at Library.

Princeton

Nassau Street: Nassau Hall, the original college building

To right of Nassau Hall is the MacLean House, the back part of which dates to Edwards' presidency.

Cemetery is a block east of Nassau Street; near the front of the cemetery is the row of presidents' table graves, including Edwards', with a plaque on the side commemorating Sarah Pierpont Edwards; nearby is also the grave of their grandson, Aaron Burr, Jr.
